Youth Symphony Conductor (ASYO)

Compensation: $350–$450 per month, based on experience (12-month contract)

Position Description

The Youth Symphony Conductor, part of the Alpharetta Symphony Youth Orchestras (ASYO), leads and mentors young musicians, guiding them through rehearsals and performances. This role combines musical expertise with teaching and leadership skills to develop young musicians and create engaging and educational performance experiences. The Youth Symphony Conductor is hired by and is under contract to Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra, Inc. The Youth Symphony Conductor, an at-will position, is responsible to and subject to the direct supervision of the Executive Director and the Education and Outreach Director. 

Responsibilities:

  • Musical Leadership: Conduct rehearsals and performances, providing clear direction and helping musicians interpret the music to ensure cohesive and expressive playing.

  • Repertoire Selection: Select repertoire that aligns with the orchestra’s skill level and educational goals, creating balanced and engaging concert programs. If needed, ensure accurate transcription of all musical parts, including any additions beyond the original score.

  • Educational Guidance: Teach musical techniques, concepts, and performance practices. Offer individual and group instruction to improve musicianship and ensemble playing.

  • Rehearsal Planning: Develop and implement rehearsal schedules, setting goals for each session to efficiently prepare for performances.

  • Motivation and Inspiration: Inspire and motivate young musicians, fostering a positive and encouraging environment that promotes learning and growth.

  • Technical Instruction: Provide feedback on intonation, rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, and other technical aspects of playing. Help musicians develop their individual skills and ensemble playing.

  • Artistic Vision: Communicate and guide the orchestra to realize an artistic vision, making decisions about tempo, balance, and expression.

  • Collaboration with Staff: Work closely with the Education and Outreach Director, Youth Orchestra Coordinator, sectional coaches, and other staff to ensure smooth functioning of the orchestra program. Assist in coordinating logistics, event planning, and administrative tasks.

  • Performance Preparation: Prepare the orchestra for concerts. Ensure musicians are confident and well-prepared for public performances.

  • Community Engagement: Represent the orchestra in the community, participate in outreach activities, and build relationships with schools, parents, and local organizations.

  • Professional Development: Continuously develop skills as a conductor and educator, staying informed about new teaching methods, repertoire, and trends in music education.

  • Calendar and Venue Management: Work with the Education and Outreach Director and Executive Director to plan the season's calendar, secure venues, and manage rehearsals and concerts.

  • Auditions and Personnel: Conduct auditions, select playing personnel, and determine seating within each section. Maintain artistic and educational quality.

  • Recruitment: Collaborate with the Education and Outreach Director to recruit new members, contact local music educators and private teachers, and act as an advocate for the ASYO and Alpharetta Symphony Organization.

  • Logistics: Oversee set up, break down, and clean up spaces for rehearsals and performances. Coordinate music with the Youth Orchestra Coordinator and Librarian.

  • Memberships: The Youth Orchestra Conductor is responsible for managing and fulfilling duties to maintain membership in the GMEA.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field.

  • Experience: Previous experience conducting in a school or youth symphony. Orchestral conducting experience and broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire suitable for youth orchestras. 

  • Skills:

    • Strong musical leadership and conducting skills.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

    • Ability to teach and inspire young musicians.

    • Proficiency in string instruments is a plus.

    • Proficiency in using music notation software.

    • Organizational and project management skills.

  • Abilities:

    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

    • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including students, parents, volunteers, and professional staff.

    • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by rehearsal and performance schedules.

  • Personal Attributes:

    • Passion for music and supporting young musicians.

    • Initiative and the ability to work independently.

    • Professional demeanor and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

  • Background Check: Must pass annual background check (paid for by the Alpharetta Symphony).

Treasurer, Board of Directors

Position Description

The Treasurer is elected to serve (volunteer position) as an officer of the Alpharetta Symphony’s Board of Directors and is under agreement to Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra, Inc. The Treasurer collaborates closely with the Executive Director and Board President to ensure the organization is achieving its fiscal and fundraising goals in keeping with the organizational mission, budget, and mandates of the Board.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a voting member of the Board of Directors.

  • Attend all Board meetings.

  • Serve as a member of the Board’s Governance/Executive Committee.

  • Chair the Board’s Finance Committee.

  • Determine the operating budget based on the orchestra's fiscal year and budgets for specific programs or tasks in conjunction with the Executive Director, President, Board members, and other program heads.

  • Prepare and generate timely, accurate, and reliable financial reports on a monthly basis and at the end of the organization’s fiscal year for the Finance Committee, Board of Directors, Executive Director and Music Director. Financial reports include budget documents, statements of financial position, cash flow and activity and comparison of budget to actuals. Timely and reliable financial information is crucial for sound and informed financial decision making.

  • Ensure the fiscal year operating budget is submitted to the Board of Directors for approval.

  • Monitor the organization’s current and future financial health.

  • Create and review operating budgets and update forecasts as needed.

  • Follow statutory and regulatory financial deadlines and responsibilities as required.

  • Develop financial goals and the measures to achieve them.

  • Establish, along with the Finance Committee, and distribute the organization’s financial policies and procedures. Ensure financial policies receive approval by the Board of Directors.

  • Oversee the activities of the Bookkeeper.

  • Oversee audits as required.

  • Sign corporate resolutions, bank documents, and contracts when necessary.

  • Align financial goals with the organization’s mission.

  • Identify and manage risk.

  • Identify investment strategies to manage and grow the organization's funds.

  • Safeguard the organization’s assets, data, and sensitive information.

  • Act as advocate for the Alpharetta Symphony organization.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a financial or business field, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

  • Technical accounting skills to oversee funds collected and distributed.

  • Investment management skills to grow the funds and expand the organization’s community reach.

  • Organizational leadership to strategize and direct the group’s financial future.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgment and professional presence.
